Files and RAG

Open Files — Local context to manage documents available to Chat. The page
heading says Upload, search, preview, and manage files available to chats.

Upload files

  1. Select Upload Files.
  2. Drag files onto Drag and drop files here, or select the area to use the
    system file picker.
  3. Wait for Success: <file> has been uploaded and is being processed.

Select Hide Upload to close the upload area. You can select multiple files;
the app uploads them one at a time.

Supported formats are .pdf, .txt, .docx, .xlsx, .csv, .md, .json,
and .xml. The maximum size is 50 MB per file. The upload progress bar does
not report intermediate byte progress in v1.0; it moves from the initial state
to success or error when the request finishes.

The picker accepts all of those extensions, but the current text extractor has
no PDF or DOCX path. Those files can upload and then fail extraction. Plain
text/Markdown, spreadsheets, CSV, JSON, and XML have current extraction paths.
For PDF or DOCX, export the needed text to TXT or Markdown and upload that
copy.

The upload control shows Upload failed: ... when the upload request or
storage step is rejected. An extraction failure can still show the upload
Success message and then appear in the list with both a green Processed
state and a red processing-error badge.

Use the file list

Each card shows the original filename, size, type, local date and time, and one
of these states:

  • Processed means the processing attempt ended. It does not by itself
prove extraction succeeded; require no red processing-error badge and a
nonempty View Content preview before relying on the file in Chat.
  • Processing means it is not ready for file references yet.

The list does not continuously poll a Processing item. If it remains there,
leave the Files page and return to reload the list.

Available actions are:

  • View Content opens Content Preview with extracted text. The button
changes to Hide Content while that preview is open.
  • Download saves the original uploaded file through the browser download
    flow.
  • Delete opens Confirm Delete and asks Are you sure you want to
    delete this file?
    Select Cancel or Delete.

Deleting a file removes it from the workspace and from future Chat suggestions.
Per-file Download is the only file export in this interface; there is no
whole-workspace file import/export screen.

Known file-search limitation

The search box says Search files by name or content... and provides
Search and Clear. In the current v1.0 implementation, the Files page
sends search in a request format that the server's search route does not
accept. As a result, a valid search can show Search failed even when files
exist.

Use Clear to restore the normal list, then locate the file there or type
@ in Chat to filter the processed-file suggestions. This is a current product
limitation, not evidence that the uploaded file was deleted.

Add a file to a chat request

In Chat, type @ and choose a file marked processed. A failed extraction can
remain in these suggestions and resolve with no useful text, so check its error
badge and preview first. The composer marks the reference Resolved or
Missing before you send. A resolved reference with extracted text adds up
to the first 2,000 characters to that one request.

See Chat and the Message Composer
for reference syntax and truncation behavior.

Current RAG-settings limitation

Settings > Files and RAG contains Enable RAG by Default and Default
File Archives
, with Select All and Clear All. The app saves those
values, but the current Chat request path does not read them. Selecting files
there does not automatically add them to new conversations in v1.0.

For reliable file context, use an explicit @ reference in each request. The
Files and RAG settings should be treated as stored preferences for future
integration until the Chat wiring is completed.
